One Coat Protective Oil for Solid Oak
Koate One Coat Protective Oil for Solid Oak
This is the same professional-grade oil we use in our workshop to finish our solid oak beams, shelves and window sills.
Koate One Coat Oil enhances the natural grain and character of the oak while providing a durable, protective finish. The oil is very easy to apply and is designed to work in just one coat.
Simply apply the oil with a cloth or brush, spread evenly along the grain, and wipe off any excess. The oil reacts with the fibres of the timber to create a natural, hard-wearing finish.
Because oak is a natural material, the final colour will vary slightly depending on the grain and tone of each individual piece. We always recommend testing the oil on a small area first to ensure you are happy with the final colour.
If you are unsure which finish to choose, please view our Oil Colours & Finishes Guide or order a few sample colours to test at home.
Each 20ml sample pot will cover approximately 0.5m² of timber, which is typically more than sufficient to coat most standard oak fireplace beams, shelves, etc.
Key Features
• Enhances the natural grain and character of oak
• Provides a durable protective finish
• Single coat application
• Quick drying – typically dries within a few hours
• Suitable for oak beams, shelves, tables and interior timber
These oils react with the surface fibres of the timber, forming a protective layer that helps maintain the appearance of your oak while allowing the natural texture of the wood to remain visible.
Ideal for finishing oak fireplace beams, oak mantelpieces, floating shelves and solid oak furniture and all other internal timber products - not food safe.

Our oils are supplied in 20ml pots. Due to the One Coat technology, a small amount goes a long way. One 20ml pot will cover approximately 0.5m², which is generally enough to coat most beams, shelves, window sills and similar items.
Coverage will vary slightly depending on the texture of the timber. Rough sawn or heavily worked beams will absorb more oil, while planed and smooth timber will require less.
For best results, it is important to apply the oil using a spreading applicator or lint-free cloth so the oil is spread across the surface rather than absorbed into the cloth or sponge. This ensures the oil covers the timber properly and achieves an even finish.
Please refer to our How To Apply guide below for full instructions.

How To Apply Your Oil Finish
Our oils are a simple one-coat system designed to enhance the natural grain of the oak while protecting the timber. The process is quick and straightforward.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Prepare the timber
Ensure the timber is clean, dry and free from dust. If your product is a Sawn only or Planed only finish - lightly sand the surface in the direction of the grain and remove any dust before applying the oil.
2. Apply the oil
Apply a small amount of oil to the timber using a lint-free cloth, brush, finishing pad or plastic spreader. Work the oil into the timber along the direction of the grain. Its important not to use a cloth or sponge as the majority of the oil will get used up by soaking in to it .
3. Spread evenly
Spread the oil across the surface so there is a thin, even coat. A little oil goes a long way — do not over-apply.
4. Allow to react
Leave the oil on the surface for a few minutes to allow it to react with the timber fibres.
5. Wipe off excess - very important
Wipe off any excess oil with a clean, lint-free cloth. The surface should feel dry to the touch, not wet or sticky.
6. Leave to dry
Allow the timber to dry fully. Drying time will vary depending on temperature and airflow, but typically the oil will dry within several hours.
Important Tips
- Always test the oil on a small hidden area first
- Apply thin coats — do not over-apply
- Wipe off all excess oil
- Work in the direction of the grain
- Good airflow helps the oil dry faster
The finish you see in our product photos is achieved using this oil and application method.

Choosing Your Oil Colour
Our oil finishes are designed to enhance the natural grain of the oak while adding warmth, depth and character to the timber. Each colour works with the natural tone of the oak rather than covering it, meaning the grain and natural features will always remain visible.
Lighter finishes such as Pure, Peanut and Sand keep the oak looking bright and natural, which suits modern and contemporary interiors.
Medium tones such as Mocha add warmth and bring out more of the oak’s natural character.
Darker finishes such as Coal, Granite and Walnut create a more traditional, aged appearance and provide stronger contrast, which works well in rooms with fireplaces, darker furniture or older properties.
Because every piece of oak is unique, the final colour will vary slightly depending on the grain and natural tone of the timber. If you are unsure which finish to choose, we recommend ordering a few sample oils and testing them on the underside or back of the timber before full application.
The finishes shown on this page are applied to solid oak beams, but the same oils are used across our shelves, window sills and other oak products.
