Our Watertight Oak Barrel Ponds & Water Gardens are made from carefully selected, high-quality authentic oak wine and whisky barrels, specially prepared for use as natural ponds, water gardens and outdoor water features.

To make each barrel watertight, the individual metal bands are securely pinned in position before the barrel is filled with water. As the oak absorbs moisture, the timber naturally expands, tightening the joints between each stave and creating a natural watertight seal.

Every barrel is then left filled and checked for leaks before leaving our workshop. Because this process relies on the natural expansion of the oak rather than an internal plastic liner, only barrels in excellent condition with high-quality, tightly fitting staves are selected for our watertight range.

The result is an authentic solid oak barrel that retains the individual markings, grain and character developed during its previous life, while providing a beautiful and natural way to create a mini pond, wildlife pond, aquatic garden or outdoor water feature.

Please note: Oak barrels rely on moisture to keep the timber expanded and the joints sealed. If a barrel is emptied and allowed to completely dry out for an extended period, some initial seepage may occur when it is refilled. As the oak absorbs water and expands again, the joints will naturally tighten.

Wine or Whisky?

Wine Barrels typically have a broader shape and are available in a wider range of sizes, making them ideal for larger water gardens and planting displays.

Whisky Barrels offer the traditional character and proportions of an authentic Scotch whisky barrel and make an excellent compact garden pond or water feature.

What do the grades mean?

Grade A
Our highest-quality barrels, selected for their overall appearance and condition. Best suited to prominent locations where appearance is a priority.

Grade B
Full of authentic character with more visible signs of their previous working life. A great balance between appearance and value.

All barrels selected for this range must be of a suitable structural quality to be prepared and tested as watertight barrels

Traditional oak barrels are designed to become watertight through the natural expansion of the timber.

Before preparation, we carefully select barrels that are suitable for holding water.

The metal bands are then securely pinned to the oak staves to help keep the barrel firmly together.

The barrel is filled with water and allowed to hydrate. As the oak absorbs moisture, the individual staves expand and tighten against one another, naturally sealing the joints.

Each barrel is then checked to ensure it is holding water before dispatch.

No internal plastic liner is used.

These barrels planters are made from genuine reclaimed French oak wine barrels.

Each one will vary in:

• Colour tone
• Grain pattern
• Marks and ageing
• Metal band finish

This is part of their character — no two are the same.

Over time, the oak will naturally weather to a soft silver-grey if left untreated.

Oak barrels rely on moisture within the timber to maintain their watertight seal.

For this reason, we recommend keeping your barrel filled with water wherever practical.

If a barrel is emptied and allowed to completely dry for an extended period, the oak may shrink slightly and some initial seepage can occur when it is next filled.

This does not necessarily mean the barrel has failed.

As the oak absorbs water again, the timber should naturally expand and the joints between the staves tighten.

Regularly check the barrel, water level and surrounding area as part of normal garden maintenance.

Nationwide Delivery

Your barrel will be prepared and checked for watertightness before leaving our workshop.

The barrel is drained before transport and will therefore arrive empty.

Delivery is calculated at checkout based on your postcode.

Please allow 7-10 working days for delivery.

• Someone must be present to receive the goods
• Delivery is kerbside only due to the size and weight of the barrels
