Firewood densities use Celtic Timber’s supplied weights per 0.8 m³ bag: hardwood 230 kg, softwood 140 kg and oak offcuts 280 kg. Kindling nets contain 4–5 kg; calculations use 4 kg per net by default.

Good estimates start with clear assumptions.
Fuel weight = rated kW × average output × hours per evening × evenings per month × months ÷ stove efficiency ÷ 4.1 kWh/kg. Volume = fuel weight ÷ weight per 0.8 m³ bag × 0.8. Kindling is calculated separately per lighting; its heat is not deducted from the log estimate.
Volumes include the air gaps in a loose load. They are not solid or neatly stacked wood volumes. Moisture, log sizes, chimney draw and the way you run your stove all affect consumption. Oak offcut packing is especially variable.
Energy reference: Forest Research gives about 4.1 kWh/kg for logs at 20% moisture. This is a conservative planning value for dry logs. Firewood densities are derived from Celtic Timber’s supplied bag weights (230 kg hardwood, 140 kg softwood and 280 kg oak offcuts per 0.8 m³). Actual weights may vary. Kindling consumption per lighting remains an estimate. Follow your stove’s fuel and loading instructions; use offcuts only if suitable for your appliance.
