Natural Oak – Character & Variation
We work with natural solid oak, not engineered or veneered boards, so each piece will have its own unique character.
Oak is a natural material, and every board we produce is unique. Variations in grain, colour, knots and natural character are part of what makes solid oak such a beautiful and authentic material.
Will my board contain joins?
For wider boards (typically over 150mm), it may be necessary to join carefully selected sections to achieve the required width. This is standard practice in solid oak joinery and allows for wider, more stable boards.
All boards are professionally jointed, colour and grain matched, and finished to the same high standard.
Size tolerance
As this is a natural timber product that is machined and finished, please allow a size tolerance of approximately ±2–3mm.
Colour variation
Solid oak varies naturally in colour from light golden tones to deeper honey and warm brown shades. Over time, exposure to natural light will cause the oak to mellow and deepen in colour, which is a normal and desirable characteristic of real oak.
Grain, knots & character
You may see natural knots, grain variation, small checks, medullary rays and character markings. These are not defects, but natural features that give each board its individual character and appearance.
Natural movement
As with all solid timber, oak may expand or contract slightly with changes in temperature and humidity. Correct acclimatisation and installation will minimise movement.

Installation Guidance
Solid oak is a natural, structural timber and should be installed correctly to ensure long-term stability and performance.
Acclimatisation
Before installation, we recommend allowing your oak shelf to acclimatise in the room where it will be fitted for several days. This allows the timber to adjust to the ambient temperature and humidity levels.
- Store flat
- Keep away from direct heat sources
- Do not lean upright against a wall
Fixing Advice
- Secure using suitable fixings into masonry or framing
- Avoid over-tightening screws
- Always allow for natural expansion and contraction
We recommend fixing close to the delivery date to minimise movement prior to installation.
If you are unsure, consult a qualified carpenter or joiner.
